1-0425.3 LEAP Personnel, Volunteers, and Mascot

Year-round, animal welfare is a top priority, especially during emergencies. Lake County Animal Care & Control’s Large Emergency Animal Protection (LEAP) program provides emergency response for animals during disasters. During disasters and tragedies, first responders (Fire Crews or Law Enforcement) can activate LEAP services. When activated, LEAP sets up an animal staging area near the incident to provide shelter, rescue and care. The team enters evacuation zones to relocate or shelter animals, ensuring their safety and meeting urgent needs. To join LEAP, call (707) 263-0278 or email Jessica Leishman at jessica.leishman@lakecountyca.gov.

Additionally, Animal Care & Control educates residents on showing love to their pets through offering helpful pet owner tips. Show your pets love by keeping them safe:

  • Prevent dog bites. Avoid aggressive games and supervise pet interactions.

  • Follow the leash law. Keep pets leashed in public spaces.

  • Respect sleeping animals; startled pets may bite.

  • Ask before petting unfamiliar animals. Always get the owner’s permission.

  • As the weather starts to increase, never leave pets in hot cars. Even at 85°F, temperatures can reach 120°F in 30 minutes

1-0425.5 Girl Holding Kittens at Shelter

Kitten season begins in spring; shelters regularly see a surge in newborn kittens this time of year. Lake County strives to reduce pet overpopulation through education of responsible cat care:

  • Don’t “kitten-nap.” Many well-meaning people assume kittens are abandoned. Wait at least 24-28 hours before intervening, as mom will likely return.

  • Neonatal kittens need their mother. Separating them too soon can be fatal. If taking them in, be prepared to provide 24/7 care and foster them until they reach 2 pounds (6-8 weeks old), the safe age to spay/neuter and adopt.

Spay/neuter helps counter cat overpopulation. Lake County partners with SPCA of Lake County to offer affordable options.
